Who We Are
The Vinyl Frontier is Eastbourne’s oldest record shop, now in it’s fifth year. It was founded by Chris King, a music journalist, promoter and DJ of over 30 years. At a time when vinyl was still in the doldrums, Chris decided to realise his life-long ambition of opening and running his own record shop. Follow our history using the timeline below:-
History Of The Vinyl Frontier
Conception and Birth. Chris King, with the help and support of his wife Rita realises a life long ambition and signs a 3 year lease on a small shop in the heart of Eastbourne’s Old Town at 5 Crown Street. Thus The Vinyl Frontier is born.
Chris is joined in the business by Rhydd Pugh. Together they draw up plans for the future, including the development of a new brand identity for the business. Customers and supporters get involved on social media and play a key part in helping them choose the new design for The Vinyl Frontier brand.
We overhaul the shop in Crown Street with the installation of new purpose built vinyl record racks, allowing us to stock far greater quantities of records, especially new vinyl. We host our first full Record Store Day complete with a live in-store performance from Squeeze guitarist and songwriter Chris Difford.
On April 18th 2015, we opened for business at our new home on Grove Road for Record Store Day, after a marathon effort by a team of 20 plus friends and volunteers who helped us both renovate the shop and move from Old Town in just 7 days! Not bad going but all thanks to all our great friends and customers alike.
An event packed year includes opening the newly renovated café area for business on our first anniversary in Grove Road – Record Store Day – April 16th.
Preparations begin for opening Eastbourne’s latest music venue beneath The Vinyl Frontier. We host our 3 annual Record Store Day at the Grove Road shop.
